Assistant General Counsel (5 - 8 Years)

Success Academy Charter Schools - New York, NY
Practice Area: General
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description:
Overview:
Success Academy Charter Schools is a fast-growing not-for-profit charter management organization that operates twenty-two public charter elementary and middle schools throughout New York City. Our first charter school, Success Academy Harlem 1, serving largely an underserved, minority population, is among the very top charter schools in New York City and the top 1% of all public elementary schools in New York State. Success Academy Harlem 1 was featured in the documentary films Waiting for Superman and The Lottery. Our other charter schools in Harlem have also produced unprecedented student achievement results across the board, and our newer schools across the city are poised to do the same. We are particularly proud that our schools put to rest the notion that there are certain populations or zip codes where consistently high student achievement is not attainable—our schools flatly disprove this.

Over the next decade, our network will grow to as many as 40 schools that provide a phenomenal K-12 public education. Our dual mission is to offer children in New York City an exceptional public education that prepares them to succeed in college and life, and to forever alter the educational prospects for all public school students by creating a ""tipping point"" – moving a nation where educational failure is the norm to a nation that expects and demands high-quality public school options for all children.

Responsibilities:
The Assistant General Counsel position involves exceptional, hands-on experience in matters dealing with cutting-edge education law, charter school law, and public school law in a way that tangibly, and in real time, benefits the students we educate. The Assistant General Counsel will manage litigation; advise various departments on the law; draft practical memoranda advising on a course of action; prepare and assist in delivering trainings; draft policies and procedures; coordinate, oversee, and analyze compliance reporting requirements; review and negotiate contracts; manage junior attorneys, and/or conduct other traditional in-house legal counsel functions at a not-for-profit organization. Assistant General Counsel also often lead initiatives in non-legal or crossover areas (navigation of new programs through legal requirements, conflict resolution, special education, and other areas).

Requirements:
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and a J.D., at least 5-8 years in legal practice, and must have demonstrated extraordinary success in both law school and in the workplace. Candidates must be licensed to practice law in New York. Federal clerkship a plus.

The candidate must be a team player but also be able to work independently. Prior experience leading projects and/or teams of attorneys is valued. Strong writing, research, problem solving, and analytical abilities are required. Additionally, excellent interpersonal skills and good judgment are a must, as well as incredible attention to detail and the ability to work well under pressure. The ideal candidate will have engaged in significant pro bono work. He/she will have a passion for education reform and be eager to learn about the inner workings of running and managing high-performing charter schools.
